MEDIA WARS- FIRST PART. THE GAME OF THE FOUR PILLARS- నాలుగు స్తంభాలాట
I do not know if it is prevalent in other states, but girls in AP play a game called "Four Pillar Game". In our village, during the Chariot Festival of Lord Shiva every year in February, they used to build a porch in front of the Temple in a huge area. On long wooden poles, a wooden mesh was being made and on that palm leaves were being stitched. It was cool summers under the porch.
During Sri Ram Navami and summer holidays too school going girls used to collect there and play this four-pillar game. As we were children we too used to join. The game goes on like this. Four girls were standing near four poles (it is like a square). One girl used to stand in the middle. The girls at the poles frequently change positions and while doing so the girl in the middle should touch one of them so that that girl will come in the middle and the girl in the middle takes one pole. For this purpose, two girls each used to hold hand and make invisible signs to move.
In Telugu, one famous Director directed a nice film called, "నాలుగు స్తంభాలాట" that exactly means four poles' game. In this, a guy loves a girl, makes her pregnant but he was forced to marry another girl due to forced circumstances beyond his power. His friend marries the pregnant girl knowing fully well she was pregnant. But, the four live their past lives in their present in sorrow and the melancholic drama that ends in a tragedy was the story as far as I knew.
Indian democracy had been a tragic 'four pillar game' story in the past decade. No! It was not a love story. It was a story illicit relationships between three players that made the fourth player a mute witness to the rot that settled in the game, as hard evidence was manipulated by the three players. The hapless common man in the middle was tired of running here and there, never able to touch any of the players, despite all the Rights reportedly conferred on him by Prince Pappu. Finally Pappu said his inability to touch them was "his state of mind"
Now, if we take the four poles as four pillars, it becomes a democracy game. The girl in the middle is the hapless common man. During UPA regime, more than any other time, one pillar was occupied by the strongest rumor mongers who were cunning in approach and lying always while seemingly lying low. They had hidden sources between the pillars, who used to carry the bouquet from one to the other without the knowledge of the common man. So he could never touch any occupants of any of the pillars.
Hence, instead of trying to touch only the old players time and again that he was attempting for more than six decades, he changed the whole system of the game and changed the players and brought in new players.
In this game, one pillar and the player there in must have been weak. That is the Media. If Media grows in unmitigated strength it is danger to the very survival of the four pillars and the porch that gives coolness. Unfortunately, this pillar was cemented by the other pillar politics time and again and these two together roped in the executive into their fold, making the fourth one, judiciary a mute witness. The fourth pillar too was not rid of a few black sheep here and there.
THE WAY THE GAME WAS PLAYED IN THE PAST DECADE
We all know that spinning mills and weaving community in India are always in dire straits. They spin and weave cloth. But those who had spun and woven stories based on rumors and lies and colored them with sources became very strong under a silent PM (who was never allowed too express dissent and who started talking now of dissent,) for a decade. Let us examine a story how they spun lies and rumors in such sweet language that common man standing in the middle of four pillars had no option but to look tired and awkward at not being able to do any thing but run helter skelter.
"A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." –Mark Twain
What to do about the Black Sheep
The Smith's were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower. Their line had included Senators and Wall Street wizards. Now they decided to compile a family history, a legacy for the children. They hired a fine author. Only one problem arose -- how to handle that great-uncle who was executed in the electric chair. The author said he could handle that chapter of history tactfully. The book appeared. It said, "Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution, was attached to his position by the strongest of ties and ... his death came as a real shock."
Did you observe how neatly and in perfectly articulated language the criminality of a criminal was sough to be eulogized? "His death came as real shock!". This is what the Media, the occupants of the fourth pillar in the game did for a decade. The same Media crawled when asked to bend during emergency. But for one decade, they got wings. Caterpillars suddenly turned into butterflies. They started spreading lies laced with butter. The reason, obviously, was the illicit relationship this pillar entered into with the occupants of the first pillar, politics.
“Politics and prostitution have to be the only jobs where inexperience is considered a virtue. In what other profession would you brag about not knowing stuff? “I’m not one of those fancy Harvard heart surgeons. I’m just an unlicensed plumber with a dream and I’d like to cut your chest open.” The crowd cheers.” A famous quote from a book by Tina Fey.
Churchill: "Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?" Socialite: "My goodness, Mr. Churchill... Well, I suppose... we would have to discuss terms, of course... "
Churchill: "Would you sleep with me for five pounds?"
Socialite: "Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!" Churchill: "Madam, we've already established that. Now we are haggling about the price”
This is the kind of bargaining that went on. In any democracy politics in an illicit relationship with Media is dangerous. Media develops muzzle. It covers the misdeeds of politicians under wraps by sweet lies. They do not commit anywhere the kind of relationship. It is a hush-hush affair. The illicit relationship reached its nadir, when a few journos, started lobbying for ministerial berths to persons of their choice. Common man was still playing the game running between the four pillars. But none was caught. That was the beauty of the game they played. Prostitutes sell their bodies out of need, Presstitutes sell their souls and brains out of greed.
These two illicitly living pillars dragged the third pillar, the bureaucracy or executive into the muddy puddle. "Pimps" may be a proper word. The duty of the second pillar is to see the illicit relation between the first and fourth pillars does not come out. For this purpose, they use all the tricks in the trade. Make wrong noting on the file, erase the note, misguide the unsuspecting but too ambitious old leader of the political players and if, by chance truth comes out miss the files, burn buildings and with them the files. When all this is happening the live-in-partners of the politicos look the other way as if nothing has happened and later twist facts to suit their patrons and see they are protected from the eyes of the third pillar. So, by the time the common man stranded in the middle approaches the third pillar, Judiciary, the eyes of the players there are totally blinded by the wrongful evidence submitted by the other three players. again, the game goes on and on.
Then, came the Tsunami. The name of the Tsunami is Narendra Modi. There was a sudden break in the game. Common man suddenly found his strength, for the first time in independent history. And then the inevitable happened. Ass Pain started for the rivals and Private Jets flew to Aspen. A coup was sought to be perpetrated. Then, what happened? Please be reading the next part. (This may take a little time).
To understand the relation between the three pillars that played the game and the one pillar that was mute witness as evidence was not forthcoming, please understand this relation. To understand the nasty dynasty that misruled the nation understand the following. Who is who to whom? We were in total darkness.
Many many years ago when I was twenty three, I got married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter Who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her, And soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law And changed my very life. My daughter was my mother, For she was my father's wife. To complicate the matters worse, Although it brought me joy, I soon became the father Of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became A brother-in-law to dad. And so became my uncle, Though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, Then that also made him brother To the widow's grown-up daughter Who, of course, was my stepmother. Father's wife then had a son, Who kept them on the run. And he became my grandson, For he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother And it makes me blue. Because, although she is my wife, She's my grandmother too. If my wife is my grandmother, Then I am her grandchild. And every time I think of it, It simply drives me wild. For now I have become The strangest case you ever saw. As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa!
